There’s an important distinction

I have a friend who is outwardly the best person I know. He volunteers in his free time and is a community organizer at his job for volunteer events. He’s in the world of education and hopes to be able to write educational policy one day. He went to grad school twice.

He never sleeps and is largely miserable. He has little to no time for self-care, exercise, or healthy food preparation. The stress of being a bleeding heart will probably one day give him a… Bleeding heart (forgive me).

Obviously, there is nothing bad about volunteering, nor inherently wrong with it. but we often think about volunteering or helping out the same way we think about everything else in this country:

  • “WHOEVER ACHIEVES MOST WINS!!!” Or
