What you're misunderstanding here is the balance of power. Your landlady (if she had ever asked you for sex in exchange for rent), as someone who had the keys to your apartment, could never have just opened your door and taken it at any time. In that situation, you still have physical power.

We've got to stop this socioeconomic squabbling among ourselves as the people who are getting screwed. Stop arguing against people who were in positions as bad as yours were, saying that they should have debased themselves to get ahead, or just survive. The woman in this story is not your enemy. The enemy in this story (and in most stories) is the one holding the power.
