Turns out, the real patriotism involved in being a good citizen is hard work. It’s thankless, and it’s not some superficial display of loyalty. There’s nothing convenient about being a true patriot. It means standing up for everyone’s rights, not just those with power and privilege. It’s not about throwing around constitutional commonplaces to justify someone’s obnoxious, abusive behavior — or your own.
